One of the first things I wanted to do was monetize this blog a bit to help cover costs.  In particular, I had two things I wanted to do:

  1. Provide a reading list of books I’ve read or am currently reading.  I would provide links to purchase those books via Amazon or in some cases ClickBank (for e-books).
  2. Place AdSense ads on the blog to provide a bit more content-related ad revenue.

I applied to both Amazon Associates and Google AdSense to get the ball rolling.  Amazon came back fairly quickly…no problem.

Google replied”…Unfortunately, after reviewing your application, we’re unable to accept you into Google AdSense at this time….”  Bummer.  Their concern was that the site did not meet the  quality guidelines.  These guidelines are concerned primarily with two things:

  • That the site is not deceptive
  • That the site provides original content

Obviously, my site is not deceptive in any way, so I can only guess that it lacks enough content.  I’m a little disappointed, but on the other hand, I’ll use the opportunity to develop the site more.

There is one very significant advantage to having few, if any, links/ads on a new site.  A new site wants viewers to stay on the site.  Ads take viewers away when they click on the advertising.  Something to think about.
